Through the Open Door

When I walked through the open door

amazement struck me.

A hard green papaya

smashed me on the head,

stopping me in my tracks.

I fell to the ground.

A peacock with an electric blue throat

spit out a snake

looked me in the eye

and told me

Everything else can wait.

Was it talking bird talk?

I think about that now,

but then I only listened.

Ignoring the thoughts swimming in my mind.

Mail unopened

Bills unpaid

life’s daisy chain of moments ignored.

I found my breath

and sat still in new territory

Deadheaded like roses awaiting new growth.
